How to read the zodiac

A clear starting guide to the building blocks behind our Sun-sign and compatibility pages. Astrology is a symbolic tradition for reflection, not a scientific way to measure personality or predict a relationship.

The four elements: what energizes a sign?

Astrology groups the signs into four elements. The element is a broad description of how a sign tends to approach life; it is not a complete personality description.

  • Fire — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius: action, enthusiasm, and inspiration. Fire signs often want to try the idea and see what happens.
  • Earth — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn: practical effort, patience, and results. Earth signs often ask what will work in daily life and last over time.
  • Air — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius: ideas, conversation, and perspective. Air signs often want to ask questions, compare views, and understand the pattern.
  • Water — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces: feeling, closeness, and emotional awareness. Water signs often notice the mood and what a person may need to feel safe.

When two elements meet, ask how their different strengths could work together. Fire may get a plan started while Earth makes it practical; Air may name the idea while Water notices how it affects people.

Three modalities: how does a sign move?

Each element has one sign of each modality. The modality describes a sign’s style of beginning, sustaining, or adjusting—not whether a person is good or bad at those things.

  • Cardinal — Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn: begins, initiates, or gets a new cycle moving.
  • Fixed — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius: sustains, commits, or protects what matters.
  • Mutable — Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces: adapts, connects ideas, or responds to changing conditions.

A pair with different modalities may divide the work naturally: one starts, one maintains, or one adjusts. Two people with the same modality may move at a similar pace, but can also double the same habit.

Ruling planets: what does “ruled by” mean?

In astrology, each sign is associated with a ruling planet. The planet is a symbolic guide to themes astrologers connect with the sign. Mercury is linked with thinking and communication, so it traditionally rules Gemini and Virgo; Venus is linked with attraction and values, so it traditionally rules Taurus and Libra.

Different schools use different rulers for some signs. Traditional astrology assigns Mars to Scorpio, Jupiter to Pisces, and Saturn to Aquarius; many modern astrologers also use Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus for those signs. We show both where relevant. A sign’s ruler does not replace the person’s full chart.

Sign aspects: how far apart are two signs?

Astrologers also compare the signs’ places on the zodiac wheel. The angle is called an aspect. These are traditional interpretations, not a compatibility score or a prediction.

  • Conjunction (0°): These Suns occupy the same sign. Their outlook may feel familiar and amplify shared habits, though the two people are still individuals.
  • Semi-sextile (30°): These neighboring signs often approach life differently. Interest can grow through curiosity, patience, and translating what each person means.
  • Sextile (60°): This pairing is traditionally read as an opening for cooperation. The strengths may fit together, especially when both people make an effort to use them.
  • Square (90°): This pairing is traditionally read as an active tension. Different instincts can create energy and growth when neither person treats their way as the only right way.
  • Trine (120°): This pairing is traditionally read as an easy flow. Similar styles can feel natural, so it helps to keep making deliberate choices instead of taking the bond for granted.
  • Quincunx (150°): These signs are traditionally read as needing adjustment. Their habits may not translate automatically, so clear agreements can prevent repeated guesswork.
  • Opposition (180°): These signs sit across the zodiac wheel. They can act like mirrors: each may notice a quality in the other that is less familiar in themselves.

Our pairing pages name this angle and explain the traditional idea in plain language. The rest of a birth chart can add context or change how an astrologer reads it.

A Sun sign is one part of a birth chart

Your Sun sign is one placement. In a fuller chart, astrologers may also consider the Moon, rising sign, Mercury, Venus, Mars, houses, and the relationships between planets. Two people with the same Sun sign can still have very different charts, backgrounds, and ways of relating.

Use a Sun-sign reading as a way to start a conversation. It cannot tell you whether to date someone, whether a relationship will last, or what a person is like in every situation.
